Korean Soy Milk Review


Since living in Korea,  I have switched to drinking soy milk.  I didn’t ever love the taste of milk, but after the funky smell and price of Korean milk, I opted to try something new.  Below is a list of several Korean soy milk brands I have tried and my brief review of each from my favorite to least favorite.  Soy milk in Korean is called  ‘duyu’ (두유).

Soy Milk

1. Plain Soy Milk

Vegemil A

This brand of soy milk is uses the term ‘Vegetable Milk,’ so I was hesitant at first.  However, it has a pleasant mild taste and is more readily available than other brands.  The ‘Vegemil A’ is the plain unsweetened kind.  Plain soy milk makes a great substitute in cooking where you would usually use milk.  It is fortified with calcium, vitamin D, Iron and fiber.  It is around 2,300 Won for 1 Liter.

Nutrition Information: For 190 ml – 120 Calories,  7 g Fat,  1 g Saturated Fat,  0 mg Cholesterol,  240 mg Sodium,  8 g Carbohydrates,  1.3 Fiber,  6 g Sugars,  6 g Protein (100 mg Calcium, 2 micro g Vitamin D3, 1.1 mg Iron).

2. Sweet Soy Milk

‘Vegemil B’ is the sweetened counterpart to the above version.  I enjoy this soy  milk if I want to drink it plain or with cereal, you could also use it in sweet baked goods in place of milk.  It is fortified with calcium, vitamin D, Iron, and fiber.  It is around 2,300 Won for 1 Liter and can be found at most places.

Nutrition Information: For 190 ml – 130  Calories,  7 g Fat,  1 g Saturated Fat,  0 mg Cholesterol,  230 mg Sodium,  10 g Carbohydrates,  1.3 g Fiber,  10 g Sugars,  7 g Protein (100 mg Calcium, 2 micro g Vitamin D3, 1.1 mg Iron).

3. Sweet Walnut and Almond Milk

This is an almond walnut milk.  It is a bit sweeter and creamier than soy milk.  It is fortified with calcium and fiber.  It is really delicious.  You can usually only buy it in bulk or in small 190 ml containers.  It is about 700-900 Won for 190 ml at most convenient stores and marts.

Nutrition Information: For 190 ml – 130 Calories,  7 g Fat,  1 g Saturated Fat, 0  mg Cholesterol,  210 mg Sodium,  10 g Carbohydrates,  1.4 g Fiber, 7.5 g Sugars,  7 g Protein (100 mg Calcium).

4. Plain Calcium Soy Milk

Maeil  Soymilk

This particular Maeil brand of soy milk is fortified with calcium and vitamin D, it is actually called ‘Calcium Duyu.’  It has a smooth unsweetened taste, good for everyday use.  It is about 2,500 won for 1 Liter.  I have only seen this brand at Home Plus.

Nutrition Information: For 190 ml – 130 Calories, 7 g Fat,  1.5 g Saturated Fat,  0 mg Cholesterol,  200 mg Sodium, 10 g Carbohydrates, 0 g Fiber,  7 g Sugars,  7 g Protein (200 mg Calcium, 1 micro g Vitamin D3).

5. Pulmuone Plain Soy Milk

Pulmuone Soy Milk is found in the refrigerated section, unlike most other brands.  It has an unsweatened  mild taste.  The downside is that it is  not fortified with calcium like the other brands.  It is around 2,300 for 730 ml.  I have only seen this brand at Home Plus.

Nutrition Information: For 190 ml – 100 Calories, 5 g Fat, 0 g Saturated Fat, 0 mg Cholesterol, 210 mg Sodium, 10 g Carbohydrates, 0 g Fiber, 4 g Sugars, 5 g Protein.

6. Black Soy Milk

This is a black soy milk, which I do not recommend!!!  It was terrible in my opinion.  First of all, it’s a dark grey color, so already unappealing, but it is also very thick and has a distinct chalky taste.

Nutrition Information: Don’t do it!!!

I hope this short guide will help you if you are thinking about switching over to soy milk, but don’t know where to start.  There are many more types of soy milk that I have not tried yet.  Once I found a few that I liked, I really didn’t feel the need to try them all, especially after the black soy milk incident 🙂

  1. this was a good review of soy milks in korea, but i really wish you would’ve listed the nutrition value for black soy milk. it kinda sucks, that you were consistent with your reviews up until that point. you don’t recommend it, fine, but still list the full info :/ *i’ve tasted it before, and although I didn’t like how sweet it was, it simply tasted like cereal milk to me, it wasn’t a bad taste at all…

  2. Hey, nice review, but – I have to say that I disagree with your strong recommendation against the black bean soy milk. I’m normally a picky eater/drinker, and I absolutely love the taste of the black one. Since coming to Korea and tasting so many foods mixed with black beans, I quickly acquired a taste for it. It’s not as boring as the other ones!
